2012 marks 50 years of Social Representations research and this was celebrated at a tremendously successful conference at the LSE, funded by the Suntory and Toyota International Centres for Economics and Related Disciplines (STICERD) and the Institute of Social Psychology, both at the LSE.
To mark this momentous occasion Caroline Howarth, Nikos Kalampalikis and Paula Castro produced a special issue for the international journal Papers on Social Representations.
This was titled: A half century of social representations: Discussion on some recommended papers –and this can be viewed at (http://www.psych.ls.ac.uk/psr/) and includes papers from the leaders of the field, established researchers and exceptional students.
At the conference, these papers provided the basis for much engaged discussion and scholarly reflection what has been achieved within the field.
The main purpose of the conference, however, was to look forward and develop an agenda of what we collectively hope for future Social Representations research. From our collection of significant debates of the last 50 years we asked: what next? Collectively, as an international group of scholars, researchers and students, what do we what to achieve? These questions led to rich and fascinating discussions on the importance of rigorous methods – appropriate for real-world research; the value of highlighting our work as ‘Social Representations’ research and/or finding points of connection with similar theories and fields of research; our responsibility to our students and younger colleagues in involving them in generating new developments, critiques and departures.
We hope this marks a renewed sense of vision and energy for the community generally and PSR in particular. We would like to thank all those who came and made the conference such a success.
