Challenges in the social psychological analysis of racism

The analysis of racism and related forms of inter-group discrimination has formed a key part of the history of social psychology. In as much as the analysis of racism calls for a historically-grounded, multi-theoretical and multi-methodological social psychology, it will no doubt prove central also to the future of the discipline.

This collaborative session presents material – including both narratives and images - gathered by researchers on the Apartheid Archive Project.

Rather than a presentation of findings, the presentation will draw on the gathered expertise of the audience to explore explanatory routes through the conceptual challenges of the material.

The session posed the question of what methodologies and theoretical perspectives are best suited to conceptualizing forms of social contact and discrimination which although historically distant still have a lingering presence today.
