Key Concepts of Societal Psychology

Convenor: Professor Martin W Bauer

Structure: Lecture only sessions during MT,  Aim: These lectures were delivered by ISP staff who presented key concepts of social and societal psychology to all PhD and MSc students in Social and Cultural Psychology (SCP),Organisational Social Psychology (OSP), Social and Public Communication (SPC) and Health, Community and Development (HCD). These concepts formed the common basis for these programmes where they were elaborated in many different ways.

Objective: Students who listened to these lectures were hopefully able to understand key social psychological concepts and recognise their value in their own field of study and research.

18th November 2010 - Andrew Gibbs of the Health Economics and AIDS Research Division (HEARD) in South Africa presented a seminar to ISP, entitled: "Health Care Workers Managing the risk of Multi-drug Resistant and Extreme Drug Resistant Tuberculosis in South Africa: Symbolic risk management".

KwaZulu-Natal, Health Care Workers are between 5-7 times more likely to contract MDR-TB or XDR-TB compared to the general population. Andy's talk used a social psychological framework to explore risk perception and day to day risk management strategies used by nurses in the context of limited resources and limited ability to influence their working conditions.  More Health, Community and Development news


8-15 November 2010 - Professor Saadi Lahlou will be on field for the SHEOS (subjective Human Experience Observation System) project in Moscow.


10-11 November 2010 - Professor Sandra Jovchelovitch led the 1st Round of Discussions on Underground Sociabilities taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first seminar for discussing the initial results of the inter-institutional research collaboration onUnderground Sociabilities will take place on the 10th and 11th November in Rio de Janeiro. Professor Sandra Jovchelovitch, principal investigator of the research, is leading the presentation on four key areas: (1) Youth, Citizenship and Routes of Socialization; (2) Identity and Diversity; (3) Urban Frontiers and Social Mediation; (4) Creativity, Culture and Social Innovation in Brazil.

Underground Sociabilities is mapping and systematising the work of AfroReggae and CUFA, cultural organisations that use the arts and the imagination to produce social regeneration in Rio's favelas. The seminar will bring together academics, activists, research partners, UNESCO and the charitable foundations of Itaú Cultural and Itaú Social to reflect on the initial findings of the research.


06th November 2010 - Kerry Scott and Catherine Campbell from the HCD Research Group presented a paper entitled "The role of advocacy and activism for maternal health in India" at an ESRC conference on "Reproductive morbidity and poverty" . The conference was organised by a consortium of six UK universities, including LSE Health. Read more

1st October 2010 -   Professor Sandra Jovchelovitch gave a key note speech at University of Linköping in Sweden.
 
Professor Sandra Jovchelovitch delivered a key-note lecture at the 10th Anniversary Conference of the Graduate School in Language and Culture in Europe, University of Linköping, Sweden. The Conference took place from 6 to 9 October 2010, with a focus on Recontextualising Memory. Other invited speakers included James Wertsch (Washington University), Theo Hermans (UCL), Lorenza Mondada (Lyon) and Stephen Regan (Durham).  Professor Jovchelovitch did a speech on 'History and Representation in Narratives of Public Life in Brazil".

Rochelle Burgess's two posters focus on work she has done in Swaziland:

"The importance of community: Lessons from an analysis of community based responses to impacts of HIV/AIDS in the Kingdom of Swaziland."

"Addressing the constraints to primary school education in Swaziland: the need for holistic structural interventions to build resilience to HIV and to strengthen human capital in a maturing AIDS epidemic.

Sarah Belton's posters feature work she and her research team have done in Uganda:

"An examination of the barriers to paediatric HIV testing and HAART treatment in Kabarole district, Uganda"

"Opening Pandora's Box: Potential negative implications of the 'biomedicalization' of HIV testing and drug treatment in Kabarole district, Uganda"

Cathy Campbell and Andy Gibbs poster presents their work on home-based care in South Africa:

"Creating social environments that support effective community mobilisation: a case study of home-based care in rural South Africa"

Erin Stern's poster features her South African work on the Treatment Action Campaign:

"The limits of current approaches to stigma: Applying Honneth's theory of recognition to address AIDS related Stigma in South Africa."

7th - 8th June 2010 - Dr. Sandra Jovchelovitch has been awarded the Abbey/Group Santander Travel Fund for an academic visit to the Department of Social Psychology at ISCTE, Lisbon, in late May 2010.

Dr. Jovchelovitch, together with her PhD students, attended the workshop "Social change and transformation of ideas and behaviour", organised together with Dr. Paula Castro.   This workshop is following a very successful experience in early 2007, funded by GRICES and hosted by ISP at LSE.

21st - 22nd May - 11th Annual Graduate Conference "Observing, promoting and resisting social change: Perspectives from the Social Sciences" taking place at LSE.

Key-notes and paper presentations will be dedicated to exploring the ways in which individuals and communities experience, react to, support, or resist social change in all instances of everyday life and human interaction. Organised by ISP graduate students for graduate students from the UK and worldwide this conference is funded by the LSE Annual Fund.
