I am a relativist who came to believe that we must address real world issues. I spent 7 years in consumer research and 15 years in heavy industry, and managed 4 research units. My current research tries to understand how context influences behaviour: "Installation theory" provides a framework to describe the various components of activity; and the SEBE technique enables a pragmatic approach to changing behaviour by re-designing theese components of activity.

I enjoy tough theoretical discussions, in-depth field work, collaboration, and a glass of good wine on occasion.

I was first trained as a statistician and economist at the ENSAE in Paris, then studied human biology, did my PhD in social psychology at EHESS with Pr. Serge Moscovici, and my HDR (habilitation as a research director) at Université de Provence with Pr. Jean-Claude Abric.

I directed the research department on consumer studies at Credoc – Centre for the Study of Lifestyles and Social Policies, Paris (1987-1993);  a research unit on organizations at Electricité de France (1993-1997); founded the Laboratory of Design for Cognition at EDF R&D, which I directed until 2009, also being strategic adviser for information technology to the director of EDF R&D, and a member of the evaluation committee of the French Prime Minister office's Commissariat Général du Plan.

In parallel to my career in industry, I continued basic research in social psychology and cognitive science at the Laboratoire de Psychologie Sociale at EHESS, where I held research seminars for the last twelve years; as scientific director of the Cognitive Technologies program at Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme since 1998 and more recently as associate CNRS research director at Centre Edgar Morin (CNRS-EHESS).

In 2013 I was awarded a EURIAS senior fellowship and spent 10 months in residency at the Paris Institute for Advanced Study.

My research has been eclectic: from suicide to consumer behaviour, especially on eating, social representations theory (see my book "Penser Manger"  at Presses Universitaires de France); from newborn mimics to sustainable consumption. I am now mostly interested in using societal psychology to change the real world.

Technological innovation with ICT, workplace and organizations studies are some topics of my recent edited book on "Designing Human-Friendly Augmented Work environments" and also my book with two colleagues from te Russian Adademy of Science, Valery Nosulenko and lena Samoylenko: "Numériser le travail" abut the digitization of work . I am also interested in sustainability issues, see the recent: System Innovation for Sustainability 4.

For a recent sample of my work, go to my paper on privacy: Identity, Social Status, Privacy and Face-Keeping in Digital Society ; or to my keynote speech at EMAC 2009: Social Psychology, Marketing, and Re-installing the World.

My current research focuses on :

  • the distribution of determinants of human behaviour between the physical space, mental space, and social space ("World Installation Theory");
  • the transfer of knowledge in organizations with ICT ;
  • innovation processes, especially involving participative design;
  • digital ethnography.

I developed new investigation techniques using statistical text mining, video, and participative design. I am especially excited about the "subcam", a wearable miniature video-camera included in glasses, providing a detailed first-person recording of the subject's activity; which I claim brings revolutionary results to social science. Beware, don't prompt me on that topic or I may talk for hours.

I contribute to the Masters of the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science(DPBS), and supervise PhDs. I am the director of the doctoral programme in Social Psychology.

I convene the Consumer Psycology course; and with Dr Frédéric Basso we are currently preparing a new MSc on the Social psychology of Economic Life that will start in 2016-17.

I believe in the value of field work and transdisciplinarity; and make sure students widen their perspectives in these directions. I also think that applications of research in the real world are both valuable and more fun.

If you are interested in starting a PhD wih me please note that I only supervise students whose subject is very close to my research interests.
