Professor Paul Dolan

I am Professor of Behavioural Science and Director of the Executive MSc Behavioural Science. See more

I am a health economist turned behavioural scientist working at the intersection of economics and psychology, with a bit of philosophy thrown in.

My academic career was forged in the North of England at the Universities of York, Newcastle and Sheffield. I was then a Visiting Research Scholar at Princeton University with Daniel Kahneman before coming home to London, first at Imperial College and then at the LSE.

I am currently working on a trade book that will consider how the stories we are told about how to live get in the way of us leading better lives. My first book, Happiness by Design, was a Sunday Times best seller, and focusses on how behavioural science can be used to make being happier easier. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Happiness-Design-Finding-Pleasure-Everyday-ebook/dp/B00JJA5DTA

The three main themes of my work are as follows:

1.     Developing measures of happiness and subjective wellbeing that can be used in policy and by individuals looking to be happier. I wrote the questions that are currently being used by the Office for National Statistics in the UK to monitor national wellbeing

2.     Considering ways in which the lessons from the behavioural sciences can be used to understand and change individual behaviour, and to add to the evidence base in this regard. I was an author of the MINDSPACE report for the UK Cabinet Office.

3.     Using lab and field experiments to bring together (1) and (2) above.

I have 120 peer-reviewed papers, 15000 citations and an H-Index of 57. For full details on papers, please see https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=mgWk8gkAAAAJ

I have also been featured in BBC 2 Horizon documentary 'How do we really make decisions' and BBC World news. I have spoken at a number of events and festivals including Hay in the UK and overseas, Wilderness festival and Latitude.
