Dr Anam Parand

I hold an MSc in Organisational Psychology from the University of Manchester Science & Technology and a PhD in Psychology applied to Medicine from Imperial College London. Until recently, I worked as a postdoctoral Research Associate in Psychology at Imperial College within the field of quality of care and patient safety. My PhD examined the roles and powers of acute care managers in quality and patient safety. Prior to my time at Imperial, I worked at the University of Exeter implementing an applied behavioural analysis programme to improve safety in the quarrying sector.

In my research, I apply organisational, behavioural, health and social psychology into practice, particularly in the areas of organisational, home, employee, patient and passenger safety, and quality improvement. My other interests include inter-group differences and the powers held by different individuals and groups impacted upon by organisational hierarchies.

My present research focuses on safety culture within the European aviation industry. Funded by the European Commission, my main project involves adapting an established safety culture tool, originally used in the Air Traffic Management sector, to all the main stake holders involved across the aviation setting, (e.g. airlines, airports and airplane designers). This employs questionnaires and follow-up workshops to explore best practices, areas for improvement and identify any theoretical and practical lessons for aviation safety.

In my research, I mostly employ qualitative and quantitative methods comprising interviews, focus groups and questionnaires, as well as systematic reviewing and prospective risk analyses. My PhD included several studies using mixed methods and psychological theories to explore the work activities and powers of senior and middle healthcare managers within a quality improvement initiative and within their daily work in quality and safety. I have additionally led various research projects on the involvement of caregivers and elderly care-recipients in the private home and prevention/causation of medication errors.

My teaching contributions span departments: public health, surgery and the business school, and cross disciplines: health, behavioural, social and organisational psychology and medicine. Lectures I have taught include occupational stress, behavioural change, clinician involvement in quality improvement, management and quality of care, survey design and conducting qualitative research.

I am an Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London. At Imperial, I was a joint module coordinator for the modules ‘Research Methods and Applied Statistics’ and ‘Systems and Organisational Aspects of Quality & Safety’ on the MSc Quality and Safety in Healthcare. Over the last seven years I have supervised MSc projects relating to the field of quality of healthcare and patient safety.
