Matthew Adler is Richard A. Horvitz Professor of Law and Professor of Economics, Philosophy and Public Policy, Duke University. He is the author of Well-Being and Fair Distribution (2012), which provides a systematic philosophical exposition of the concept of a “social welfare function” (SWF) – in particular, defending a prioritarian SWF as the basis for public policymaking. Adler is the editor, with Marc Fleurbaey of the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Well-Being and Public Policy.

Project Description:
Adler’s research at the Center will focus on refining the account of interpersonal well-being comparisons presented in his 2012 book, and on generalizing the framework there to take account of individual responsibility.
