
On 27 February 2015, the Chinese New Year Celebration was co-hosted by the Confucius Institute for Business London (CIBL) and HSBC China Affairs Department. At 12:00pm, Mr. Douglas Flint, Group Chairman of HSBC, gave a very warm and inspiring speech for Chinese New Year, followed by a Xinjiang group dance led by CIBL Tsinghua intern Yan Xingye, Chinese Taiji and traditional Chinese lion dance. On Floor 41 multi-functional hall, the celebration was hosted by Mr. Charles Haswell, the head of Group Regulatory Policy and Development, HSBC, and CIBL UK director Nick Byrne gave a speech on the importance of learning foreign languages including the Chinese language. HSBC staff Peter Streggle also talked about his joyful experience in learning the Chinese and his engagement in the English summer camp in Tsinghua University. CIBL Tsinghua intern YU Lu presented Peking opera and gave a presentation on its history, different roles of characters, and different functions of its costumes, which stirred up the great interest of the audience. In addition, CIBL got 8 stands in the hall for the Chinese tea art, Chinese medicine, calligraphy, painting, zodiac, Guzheng and name translation with Chinese characters. The total of more than 400 HSBC staff participated in this event and experienced the Chinese culture in the HSBC headquarters in London.
