On 19th February 2013, Confucius Institute of Business London(CIBL) and China Britain Law Institute(CBLI) joint panel discussion ‘China, Intellectual Property and Innovation’ was successfully held at Tower One, London School of Economics. Daniel Poon, Commercial Manger (IP) from Romax Technology, Michael Wong, head of China (London) from CMS Cameron McKenna LLP, Michelle Chen, Director of China Business from Berwin Leighton Paisner L.L.P. and Henry Carr QC, from 11 South Square were invited to speak on the panel. This event was chaired by Mr Matthew Townsend, co-founder and director of the CIBL.
The discussion began at 6:30pm with around 100 participants joining us. Intellectual property (IP) remains a major concern for western companies operating in China. However, with the situation changing dramatically in recent years, this discussion examined the challenges, opportunities and risks of operating in the Chinese market. To avoid potential bad outcomes, the speakers concluded the most important thing is to preregister. The panellists also answered questions raised by the audience, including the IP protection of software source code, trademarks and others. The discussion ended successfully amidst applause, followed by a reception held in CIBL office. (CIBL Yu LIU)
