On 26th January, 2013," China in Transition"——the China Development Forum was successfully held in New Academic Building, LSE. The forum was co-sponsored by the Confucius Institute for Business, London (CIBL), LSE and the LSE China Development Society.
November 2012 saw the once-in-a-decade power transfer in the 18th National Congress. This year’s Forum focussed on China ’ s development in the context of important changes in the Chinese political landscape.
With a comprehensive, in-depth examination of China’ s current challenges and future opportunities in international relations, urbanization, legal reform, educational changes, growing soft power and business, economic and financial outlooks, about 26 scholars and experts spoke at the one-day China Development Forum 2013, and exchanged views with the participants on such issues as China's Asia-Pacific Relations and Disputes, Sino-Western relations, youth development, Chinese economic prospects for sustainable growth, legal reform and China on the global stage.
The forum featured keynote speakers including Kevin Rudd, former prime minister of Australia, Martin Jacques, visiting senior research fellow at IDEAS of the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE), Jacques Delisle, Director of the Centre for East Asia Studies and professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania, and Gerard Lyons, Chief Economist at the Standard Chartered Bank.
Experts and scholars from China including Weiming Tu, founding Dean of the Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies of the Beijing University, and Yu Jianrong, head of the Rural Development Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Science, Youxi Chen, Chairman of Capital Equity Legal Group, Qingshi Zhu, Founding president of South University of Science and Technology also spoke at the event.
The annual event, which is now in its fifth year, aims to establish a platform for vibrant, in-depth intellectual discussions among students, academics and professionals on key issues facing China. (CIBL Yu LIU)
