CIBL Chinese Day and 'taster' class at Norton Rose

The Chinese 'taster' class hosted by Confucius Institute for Business London  LSE took place in Norton Rose at noon on the 1st of April 2011.

The class consisted of three main parts:

The first was a presentation given by Dr. Hong Lu, the director of Executive Programme  of CIBL, about the Chinese business culture and language courses  available from the Institute .

The second was a demonstration by one of the Institutes teachers of a typical 'Chinese business language' class. Ms He highlighted the characteristics of the language and the comparison between  Chinese and English. The interactive teaching methods gave the "students" an awareness of, among other things, the fact that the rudimentary grammar of Chinese is easy to grasp and the meaning of Chinese characters is rich and colourful. The teachers performance  was very well received by all in attendance.

The final element of the class presented by Dr. Dong concerned 'Chinese business culture'. This section of the class focused on the profound Chinese culture. Dr. Dong highlighted and compared the different nuances of business culture between the East and the West. There was a very high level of engagement with this topic as so many in the class found the subject matter so interesting and useful.

This excellent 'taster' class  which in total attracted the attendance 65 professional from the firm, was assisted by and held in conjunction with the Norton Rose Department of China Development. Due to time considerations it would have been impractical to have given a much broader presentation on the vast history of China. In consideration of this fact, CIBL had designed a bespoke class tailored to the requirements of Norton Rose. Its focus and attention to detail allowed the class to make excellent use of the time available and further inspired the interest of the lawyers present in the Chinese language and business culture. The exhibition stand placed at the entrance of the building before the commencement of the presentation continued to attract more participants throughout the day.

Norton Rose is a leading international legal practice with expertise in such notable areas as banking, corporate finance, dispute resolution ,asset finance, and many other areas. It has over 1800 lawyers operating from 29 offices  all over the world.

  Norton Rose

China, FreeTrade Agreements &WTO Law: A Perspective From Services Trade

Services trade is playing an increasingly important role in, and contributing to the recovery of, world trade. The impasse on negotiation of WTO agreement on services — the GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services) — seemingly facilitates the mushrooming of FTAs (free trade agreements). There is tension between the WTO law and FTAs. The former has set non-discrimination as one of its fundamental principles. But the latter grant preferential treatment to their participants, which is not extended to outside parties. Therefore GATS Article V imposes disciplines on economic integration. In recent years, China has signed a number of services FTAs domestically and with other developing or developed countries. In the lecture, a number of issues will be discussed: What is the relationship between China's FTAs and WTO law? Are these FTAs stumbling or building blocks for multilateral liberalization? How will potential challenges, if any, be possibly addressed?
