On the evening of November 23rd 2011, Lord Nat Wei, one of the youngest members of the House of Lords, was invited by the Confucius Institute for Business London (CIBI) to give a speech, at the Hong Kong Theatre of LSE, concerning the role of the Chinese Diaspora in Britain. This speech was part of the memorial lecture for the late Lord Michael Chan, of Chinese descent, who contributed to the British community as a physician and nationalist. The audience included British government officials, British born Chinese, overseas scholars and students. The lecture was chaired by Dr. Kent Deng of Department of Economic History, LSE.
During the speech, Lord Wei first commemorated the contribution Lord Chan had made for the Chinese-British community, and then introduced his idea of the "Chinese Dream". Lord Wei quoted an idiom he had learned from CIBI's Chinese class: "众人拾柴火焰高" (When everyone collects the firewood, the flames rise high.) That is to say, everyone could take advantage of his or her professional skills and energy to contribute to achieving this "Chinese Dream". Lord Wei believes that these intractable issues .we encounter can be solved by the determination and vision of all people,. He also proposed a leadership program aimed at attracting talented young British Chinese and those who interested in Chinese culture to work together and find solutions to the challenges the Chinese Diaspora community are currently facing.
Lord Wei ended this lecture by quote from The Art of War by Sun Tzu: '进而不求名,退而不避罪,为民是宝,而利合于主,国之宝也'(The general who advances without coveting fame, and retreats without fearing disgrace, whose only thought is to protect his country and do good service for his sovereign, is the jewel of the kingdom.)
