China development forum 2009 report

China Development Forum 2009 was organized for the first time as a China- Focus forum in the LSE. It was hosted by LSESU China Development Society, sponsored by HSBC, Confucius Institute for Business London and LSE Annual Fund. The forum was honoured to partner with LSE Economics Department, LSE Asian Research Centre, CCPN and ACfPU.

The one day forum focused on the outlook of China's economy in 2009 and the challenges it would face. Since the Chinese economy is expanding at a record speed, it had attracted more and more interests from LSE students and . Meanwhile, due to historic and political reasons, many students know little about actual stories happening in China. Therefore, China Development Society proposed this forum to help students to broaden their understandings about China's economy. Meanwhile, by inviting people from very different background, we aimed at providing impartial views and thus expecting collision of thoughts and ideas.

Although the initial aim of CDS was to deliver an event to help its members, the highly appealing properties of the forum had attracted numerous non-CDS-member scholars as well as professionals from outside LSE. From our statistics from the registration on the day, we had 142 audiences in total, among whom 110 were CDS members, 25 academics and 7 professionals. The attendance was satisfying.

We were proud to have the following prestigious speakers joining our forum:

  • Prof. Wang Yiming (Vice-President of Academy of Macroeconomic Research (AMR), National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC))
  • Prof. Zhang Jun (Professor of Economics at Fudan University)
  • Mr. Daniel R Pearson (Chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission)
  • Prof. Danny Quah (Head of Economics Department, LSE)
  • Prof. Athar Hussain (Director of Asian Research Centre, LSE)
  • Dr. Paul Sheng (Partner of McKinsey & Co.)
  • Prof. Peter Nolan (Sinyi Professor of Chinese Management, Cambridge)
  • Mr. Gabriel Stein (Lombard Street Research)
  • Dr. Kent Deng (Department of Economic History, LSE)
  • Dr. Bingqin Li (Department of Sociology, LSE)
  • Dr. Qin Fei (Department of Management, LSE)

We got many positive feedback from audiences with suggestion of improvements. Main improvements of the following should be expected in the next forum:

  • Networking sessions should be extended to allow deeper communications between audiences and speakers;
  • Topics of each session was too general;
  • The duration was too long, a considerable percentage of feedbacks mentioned the day had been too intense;
  • More direct dialogues could be made between speakers with strongly different stances on a certain issue, say Mr. Daniel Pearson and Prof. Wang Yiming on US-China Trade.
